Shadda silk was a material sourced from the Outer Rim planet Shadda-Bi-Boran, inhabited by the Shadda-Bi-Boran species. Towards the end of the Great Peace of the Republic, astrophysicists predicted that the planet's white dwarf sun, Shadda, would cease providing enough radiation to prevent Shadda-Bi-Boran from freezing over. This endangered the Shadda-Bi-Borans, who depended on their sun to activate an enzyme that purified toxins from their bodies.[1]

As a result, kerchiefs and armbands made of Shadda silk were sold in fundraising efforts. The proceeds were divided between research to artificially trigger the enzyme and the search for another star that could support the Shadda-Bi-Borans. The Shadda silk kerchiefs and armbands became essential expressions of sympathy in wealthy circles throughout the galaxy. Ultimately, the efforts to save the Shadda-Bi-Borans were unsuccessful.[1]

Behind the scenes

Shadda silk was mentioned in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, written by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry.[1]
