The rank of Senior Commander was a rank used within the Galactic Republic and the Galactic Empire.
Senior Commander was a rank within the Grand Army of the Republic among the Clones, in particular, it acted as the second-highest rank among the clones, with only Marshal Commander outranking it.
Hamelin served as a senior commander for the Rebel Alliance.[1]
This line rank was used by the Imperial Navy. It ranked above Junior Commander, and below Senior Captain. Senior Commanders could hold a position of Captain (starship commanding officer) or Lieutenant (ship officer crew). The rank was the equivalent of Imperial Army and Starfighter Corps Major.[2]
Not long after the Battle of Yavin, in 0 ABY, The Chimaera's Grondarle held this rank in the capacity of the ship's first officer.
Behind the scenes
It appears that Senior Commander denotes a substantive rank than than a title of primacy as in the novel Choices of One, Grondarle is explicitly described as "The first officer, Senior Commander Grondarle", the capitalization of Senior Commander denoting a substantive rank in comparison to the lower-case for "first officer", a title denoting a position of executive seniority.
