Sedge hats were a type of conical hat designed to protect the wearer's head from the sun. The hat included a small spike at its apex and a slit in the front through which the wearer could see. The scavenger Davan Marak wore a brown sedge hat[1] while on the desert planet Jakku[2] in 34 ABY.[3]
Behind the scenes
A sedge hat first appeared in the 2015 sequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[2] The piece of clothing was not identified in the film, but received a name in Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, a reference book written by Pablo Hidalgo[1] and released in conjunction with the film.[4] In the real world, the sedge family is a taxonomic group of grass-like herbaceous plants[5] used to produce conical hats in Asia.[6]
Several Ewoks are depicted wearing sedge hats while working as servers in an AK-BK gambling hall on the planet Olcatz in "The Duel: Payback," an episode of the third volume of the non-canon animated Disney+ series Star Wars: Visions,[7] which aired on October 29, 2025.[8] The Ewoks' sedge hats are flat discs rather than conical and are used as serving trays, with glasses and bottles stood on top.[7]
The group of Jedi known as the Crusaders also wear sedge hats in the episode, with theirs being bucket shaped and covering their entire faces. The group's leader, the cyborg known as the Grand Master, briefly wears one of the bucket-shaped sedge hats, but discards it before fighting the former Sith known as the Ronin. None of the hats were identified in the episode[7] but they were labeled in concept art of the Ewoks created by Takashi Okazaki[9] and in concept art of the Crusaders[10] also by Okazaki.[11]
