"I was once an accomplished adventurer. I scoured the galaxy looking for fame and fortune. But it all came crashing down."
―Riyan Kiner, to a spacer[2]

Riyan Kiner was a male Human adventurer turned terrorist who lived during the Galactic Civil War.

Biography

"Crates?!!? I hate 'em! Worse thing that ever happened to the universe. And did you know that there are people mass producing them! I could not believe it. When I found out, I knew that I had to take action. These crate makers must be stopped!!"
―Riyan Kiner, to a spacer[2]

Riyan Kiner was once an accomplished adventurer, albeit mentally unstable. He spent his life searching for fabled artifacts such as the Force crystal of Naga Sadow or the Journals of Ood Bnar. After searching crates for years, Kiner fostered an intense hatred of crates and finally gave up his career. He retired on Corellia and lived in a small hovel outside Tyrena.[2]

In 1 ABY,[1] Riyan Kiner was still utterly insane about crates and attacked the Joben Crate Company, a Corellian crate-manufacturing company owned by Talan Joben. Furthermore, he planted bombs at hotels across the galaxy, and threatened even more carnage if the production of crates should continue. A spacer investigating the attack of the crate company for Corellia Times reporter Vani Korr found a datapad with Riyan Kiner's threatening message. The adventurer located all the bombs and disarmed them just in time. The spacer also found evidence that led to the culprit of these terrorist attempts. The spacer tracked the retired explorer to his hovel, and Riyan Kiner was eventually killed in the confrontation.[2]

Behind the scenes

Riyan Kiner was a non-player character (NPC) in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[2] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[3] Riyan Kiner was added to the game with the update "Chapter 10: The Search for the Meatlump King," released on June 19, 2008.[4]

This NPC was known in the game as Riyan Kiner or Kiyan Riner, depending of the Combat Level (CL) of the player. If the player performed the quest "The Meatlumps Hideout, Part 1" during the leveling of their character (at CL 65), the NPC would be named Riyan Kiner. If the player performed the quest after the end of the game (at CL 90), the NPC would be named Kiyan Riner. Multiple story elements indicated that the quest was intended to be achieved at CL 65.[2]

Notes and references

  1. 1.0 1.1 The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
