The ranphyx (plural and singular)[1] was a large, feline predator native to the A'driannamieq Mountains of the planet Elom.
Biology and appearance
Ranphyx had spotted pelts that afforded the beasts natural camouflage, and the males had short mane of fur around their heads. All ranphyx had five horns on their faces—one on the forehead, one under each ear and two on the chin—used for protection and as piercing weapons in fights. Ranphyx had bare, forked tails that some scientists believed helped to dissipate heat, while others claimed it was for emotional displays.[1]
Cubs were born in litters of two after gestating for around 6 standard months. The young grew slowly and took about four years to reach adulthood.[1]
Behavior
Ranphyx lived in large, social packs led by the strongest member known as the kzenka to the Elomin. The pack had between 10 and 15 individuals. Every adult member of the pack helped train the young. Approximately every five years, the pack would have a fight amongst its members to chose a new leader.[1]
The ranphyx were the apex predators of the desert plains and mountains of Elom. They thrived in vast tracts of unsettled wilderness, the Elomin would avoid these uninhabited places due to the ranphyx being excellent ambushers and trackers. Nomadic ranphyx packs wandered the open lands, digging burrows or finding caves when shelter was needed. While they preferred living prey, they would also graze or scavenge if needed.[1]
