Rancor Base, also known as the Dathomir Shipyards, was Warlord Zsinj's secret shipyard in orbit over Dathomir.
Description
Rancor Base was a shipyard located in orbit of the planet Dathomir.[1] It was made of huge drydocks of scaffolding that stretched over ten kilometers. In addition to its shipbuilding capacities, the facility also provided repair and maintenance services to Zsinj's fleet.[5]
The Dathomir Shipyards was also used for development and testing of new weapons of war. It was there that Zsinj's engineers developed the TIE Raptor, which was used by the warlord's Raptors.[5]
The facility was defended by a number of Star Destroyers.[5]
History
The construction of an orbital facility above Dathomir was an idea originally developed by Emperor Palpatine in the context of the blockade of Dathomir.[6]
After the death of the Emperor at the Battle of Endor, Grand Moff Zsinj became a warlord and created his own empire in the Quelii Oversector.[7] When large deposits of neutronium, lommite and zersium, the minerals used in making durasteel, were discovered on Dathomir's moon of Koratas, Zsinj quickly ordered the construction of Dathomir Shipyards. All Zsinj's shipbuilding facilities were then moved to the Dathomir system but the existence of Rancor Base remained hidden to the New Republic.[5]
After the Battle of Selaggis, Zsinj's flagship, the Executor-class Star Dreadnought Iron Fist, was sent for repairs at the Dathomir shipyards.[5]
The base and its shipyard were destroyed in 8 ABY by a battle fleet sent to Dathomir by Ta'a Chume, the ruler of the Hapes Consortium, in an effort to rescue her son Isolder and Leia Organa. Zsinj was killed during the battle when the Iron Fist was destroyed.[8]
