Radiation storms,[1] also known as radiation fields[2] and radiation belts, were a natural phenomenon that occurred in space. Starships used their sensor arrays to avoid radiation fields,[3] as they were known to vary in intensity and could damage or outright destroy ship systems regardless of shields.[2] The Bank of the Core's GCC-1000 was specifically designed to be resistant to radiation storms.[2]
