R4-TRO was a type of[1] droid lantern[2] technology that, using R4 astromech droid heads, served as lighting and as a hidden missile launcher[1] of whistling birds[2] for defensive purposes. They were employed by the Anzellan Que-Dama's crew in the defense of Tkoku Island on the planet Olcatz against the Crusaders, a group led by a Jedi known as the Grand Master,[1] decades after the Sith rebellion.[3] When the Twi'lek Aneé-san and the former Sith known as the Ronin dueled the Grand Master, the Ronin pushed a button on his gauntlet that activated eight R4-TRO units placed along a stone pathway of a shrine in Tkoku Island.[1]
Behind the scenes
R4-TRO appeared in "The Duel: Payback", a non-canon short film released as part of the third volume of the Star Wars: Visions series. The animated short, produced by Kamikaze Douga and ANIMA, was released on Disney+ on October 29, 2025. The weapon was named in Aurebesh in the film.[1] "TRO," pronounced as toro in Japanese, is identified as a 灯籠[4] (tōrō, garden lantern)[5] in the Japanese-language audio description for the short film on Disney+.[4]
