"To keep droids disciplined I need escaped droids destroyed before they exit system."
EV-9D9[2]

R3-B57 was an R3-series astromech droid that operated during the Galactic Civil War. After the Battle of Yavin, R3-B57 served Jabba the Hutt's criminal empire on Tatooine under Jabba's sadistic EV-series supervisor droid EV-9D9. In 1 ABY,[1] R3-B57 and three other droids, BD-34, RA-316 and LIN-34, escaped Jabba's Palace and took refuge within the Darklighter cache. EV-9D9 thus hired a spacer to track down the droids to the cave. According to EV-9D9's punitive instructions, the spacer planted pain bolts to the droids before destroying them. In the meantime, Jabba's enemies of the Valarian Syndicate assigned a group of M12-L Kimogila heavy fighters to exfiltrate R3-B57 out of the system but the ships were destroyed by Jabba's pilots in the Tatooine system.[2]

Behind the scenes

R3-B57 appeared as a non-player character in the video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony and published by LucasArts,[2] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[3] R3-B57 was added to the game as part of the "Legacy Quest" with the release of the "Publish 25," a.k.a. the "New Game Enhancements," on November 15, 2005.[4]

Notes and references

  1. 1.0 1.1 The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
