The Quilan Pyradex was a type of artifact. Shaped like an inscribed crystal pyramid and originating in the Quilan system, it assisted with mental mathematical computations. By 3638 BBY, the Quilan Pyradexes were very rare, although one such item was recovered that year. Nearly four millennia later, a Quilan Pyradex had become a part of the slicer Shiin's private collection on the planet Tatooine.
Description
The Quilan Pyradex was a type of artifact[5] originating in[3] the Quilan system of the Mid Rim's Roche sector.[2] Made out of crystal and shaped like a pyramid with inscribed digits on its surface, the artifacts radiated inner light that highlighted several of the symbols. The Quilan Pyradexes assisted those holding them with carrying out extensive mathematical computations in their heads, although the devices were more attuned to hive-minded species than others.[4]
History
By 3638 BBY,[1] only a handful of Quilan Pyradexes had been discovered. That year, an individual affiliated with one of the sides in the ongoing struggle between the Galactic Republic and the reconstituted Sith Empire recovered one of the artifacts. They subsequently tasked a companion with investigating the mysterious origin of the item, a process that eventually involved solving an equation.[5]
At some point by 85 BBY,[6] a Quilan Pyradex had become one of the more esoteric items in the private collection of the slicer Shiin, which she held in a library in the Mos Eisley spaceport settlement on[4] the Outer Rim Territories planet[7] Tatooine. All of the artifacts in Shiin's library, including the Quilan Pyradex, had been imaged and logged into the local computer system before being locked in an armored vault.[4]
Behind the scenes
The Quilan Pyradex was first mentioned in the Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game source article "Secrets of Mos Eisley," which was authored by Peter Schweighofer and published in the seventh issue of the Star Wars Gamer magazine[4] on October 16, 2001.[8]

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Rise of the Hutt Cartel — Archaeology Crew Skill mission: "Solving the Equation" features the discovery of a Quilan Pyradex by the time of those events, those artifacts must have been created by that year.

(backup link) (screenshot) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas, stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. Given this principle, this article makes a similar basic assumption for the Quilan Pyradex in relation to the Quilan system.
