Prison Battle Droids were battle droids used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic as guards in its detention facilities during the Galactic Civil War.[1] Their design was based on Cybot Galactica's CLL-8 binary load lifter,[2] replacing its large hands with weapon systems.[1]

History

After the Battle of Yavin, Prison Battle Droids guarded a detention facility in the hidden Rebel Alliance base on Corellia.[1] In 1 ABY,[3] when the base was discovered by an Imperial agent sent by Emperor's Hand Mara Jade, at least three Prison Battle Droids were destroyed during the Imperial assault on the detention facility.[1]

Behind the scenes

Prison Battle Droids appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[4] Prison Battle Droid were added to the game with the release of the "Game Update 11," published on June 23, 2009, and were present in the game during the Empire Day events of 2009,[5] 2010[6] and 2011.[7] One of the quests of this event sent Imperial players to the Rebel prison on Corellia where they had to kill various Rebel non-player characters, including three of these droids.[1]

The game model used for this droid class was first used for various droids, such as AK-1A "Hammer" on Mustafar in Star Wars Galaxies' expansion, Trials of Obi-Wan.[8]

  3. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
