"[S]uch very different ways of writing as the Aurebesh, the ancient Durese syllabary, the Pre-Corellian alphabet, and the abjad of the Azure Imperium all use symbols from Rakatan sources, rarely in the same ways."
―Doctor Milanda Vorgan, "The Written Word: A Brief Introduction to the Writing Systems of Galactic Basic"[1]

The Pre-Corellian alphabet was a writing system used on[1] the Core Worlds planet[2] Corellia. It was derived from the Rakatan writing system and therefore related to the Aurebesh alphabet, Durese syllabary, and Axumite abjad. Although it used Rakatan symbols, the structure of the alphabet was completely different from Rakatan, which was logographic.[1] The alphabet shared its name with the Pre-Corellian language.[3]

Despite ultimately being derived from the same source, the Pre-Corellian alphabet did not spread as successfully as Aurebesh. It was used aboard Corellian starships for a thousand years after the foundation of the Galactic Republic until Aurebesh fully supplanted it. The alphabet's history was eventually described in 38 ABY publication "The Written Word: A Brief Introduction to the Writing Systems of Galactic Basic" by the xenolinguist Doctor Milanda Vorgan.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Pre-Corellian alphabet was mentioned in "The Written Word," an article that was written by John Hazlett and published on StarWars.com as a feature of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club on March 5, 2010.[1]
