The alien Pi-Lippa had a relative. Following Pi-Lippa's death[1] between 72 BBY and 41 BBY,[2] the relative purchased the enslaved Human Shmi Skywalker as property[1] from the inheritors of Pi-Lippa's estate.[3] The relative did not want to grant Skywalker's freedom in spite of Pi-Lippa's intentions to do so.[4] Skywalker was later sold as property to the Hutt[5] crime lord[6] Gardulla Besadii the Elder,[7] and was taken to the planet Tatooine,[8] where she was ultimately freed after being purchased by the moisture farmer Cliegg Lars.[7]

Behind the scenes

Pi-Lippa's relative was first mentioned in the 1999 reference book Star Wars: Episode I The Visual Dictionary, written by David West Reynolds.[6]

  2. The Official Star Wars Fact File 70 SHM 1-4: Shmi Skywalker establishes that Shmi Skywalker was enslaved as an infant and was acquired by Pi-Lippa as property until Pi-Lippa's death, which took place prior to the birth of Skywalker's son, Anakin Skywalker. According to The Official Star Wars Fact File 140 FAM 1-2: Skywalker Family Tree, Shmi was born in 72 BBY and Anakin was born 41 BBY. Therefore, Pi-Lippa must have died in between those years.
