Petro's lightsaber was the personal lightsaber of the human Jedi youngling Petro. The weapon was constructed out of various materials and emitted a blue blade. Petro built the weapon on the Paladin-class corvette the Crucible in the year 20 BBY.

The lightsaber was present during the rescue of Padawan Ahsoka Tano on Florrum, and the invasion of Florrum that followed it. It was later present during the duel at the Jedi Temple between Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and the rogue Jedi Barriss Offee.

History

Search for the kyber crystal

In 20 BBY,[5] the human Jedi youngling Petro was sent with a group of fellow younglings to the planet Ilum in order to participate in the Gathering, a Jedi ritual where the youngling would retrieve a kyber crystal to power their lightsaber. Petro traveled to Ilum on board the Crucible alongside his fellow younglings and Padawan Ahsoka Tano, who was their guide for the experience. Upon touching down, Petro and the other younglings traveled to the Crystal Cave, where they and Tano met with Grand Master Yoda for the beginning of the trial.[4]

Yoda explained that the younglings had to travel deep into the caverns of the cave to retrieve the crystal meant for them, and if they didn't make it back before the exit froze over, they would most likely die. The younglings hastily traveled into the cave and split up to find their crystals. Petro rushed through the Gathering and found an ice crystal that melted in his hand, rather than the kyber crystal that called to him.[4]

Yoda instructed him to go back inside the Crystal Cave and look closer, despite his hesitance as the door was already half refrozen. By the time Petro found his crystal, the door to the cave had completely refrozen. To the surprise of the other younglings, Petro broke through the ice and presented his crystal to his clan. The clan then followed Tano back onto the Crucible to construct their lightsabers.[4]

After leaving Ilum's atmosphere, Petro and the other younglings were greeted by Huyang, a Mark IV architect droid who had instructed Jedi for millennia on how to construct their lightsabers. Petro described to the droid professor what he felt his lightsaber should look like. However, he then rushed through the lightsaber's construction, thinking he was the first of his clan to complete the building process. Zatt asked him what the reason for him rushing. He confidently informed the others he planned to challenge Obi-Wan Kenobi to a duel and kill General Grievous with his lightsaber. Huyang inspected Petro's lightsaber, informing the youngling he put the pieces together incorrectly, and as a result, inverted the emitter matrix, which would cause power to backfire, killing Petro instead. Huyang told Petro he should take his time and not rush. The droid instructed the youngling to restart while following the diagram,[1] and reminded Petro it was important to follow directions during Jedi traditions.[6]

Soon after, Hondo Ohnaka and his pirates infiltrated the Crucible. Huyang instructed all the younglings to hand him their kyber crystals for safekeeping. However, Petro secretly held on to his crystal, instead giving Huyang a droid component. After the pirates found Petro, Huyang, Katooni and Byph in the ventilation system, Petro revealed his malfunctioning saber to the pirates, sliding his crystal into the unfinished lightsaber hilt. Katooni reminded Petro the emitter matrix was still inverted and Petro replied the pirates did not know that. The saber sparked for a moment, then shorted out. Petro then tossed his lightsaber to a pirate, who happily exclaimed they always wanted a lightsaber. The pirate ignited the blade, but as expected, the power grid backfired. Knowing the emitter matrix was about to explode, Petro and the others jumped back into the ventilation system, as Petro's lightsaber exploded, incapacitating several of Hondo's pirates.[1]

After several more altercations with the pirates, the younglings and Tano were able to drive them off their ship, but Tano was captured by the gang and taken to their stronghold on Florrum.[1]

Usage during the Clone War

After the attack on the Crucible, the younglings contacted Master Kenobi and told him what had happened. He instructed the younglings to stay put until he could assist them and Tano. While waiting for Master Kenobi's arrival, Petro finished building his lightsaber, this time properly constructing the saber. He ignited the blue blade of his completed saber, with Katooni congratulating him, as Gungi and Byph also ignited their completed lightsabers.[3]

Later, as the younglings rescued Tano from the pirates on Florrum, Petro, alongside Tano and the rest of his clan ignited their lightsabers, repelling blasterfire from Ohnaka's pirates. Petro and the other younglings all ignited their sabers as they helped free Ahsoka from captivity and commandeered a WLO-5 speeder tank, fleeing from Hondo's complex, with several of the Weequay pirates in close pursuit.[3] Gwarm and the other pirates ultimately captured Tano and the younglings and seized their weapons, including Petro's lightsaber.[7]

Once Gwarm, Tano and the younglings freed Ohnaka from captivity by battle droids in his own complex, Tano dueled General Grievous, who pursued them across the planet. As they reached a cliff, Petro and the other younglings ignited their sabers, while Tano ordered them to stay back. Moments later, Katooni and Ohnaka arrived in Slave I. Tano ordered Petro and the others to run to safety on the starship.[7]

During the last year[8] of the Clone Wars, Petro was present for a lightsaber training exercise instructed by Jedi Master Tera Sinube in the Jedi Temple training ground on Coruscant. As he and his fellow younglings trained with their lightsabers, Petro noticed a lightsaber duel occurring between Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and the rogue Jedi Barriss Offee. Petro and the others watched as Skywalker defeated and captured Offee, bringing her to justice.[9]

When Yoda went to the Wellspring of Life, he was given trials by the Force Priestesses. One trial was in the Valley of Extinction, where Yoda saw two scenarios. In the first vision, Yoda was inside the halls of the Jedi Temple, where he found Petro's corpse with his lightsaber lying on his side. In the second vision, Yoda saw an idealistic version of the Jedi Order. Yoda witnessed Petro with his lightsaber on his belt run by him smiling, as he chased other younglings across the Temple training ground. Jedi Master Dooku invited Yoda to join Petro and the other Jedi on the other side of the training ground before Yoda determined the images he was seeing were illusions.[10]

Behind the scenes

The kyber crystal for Petro's lightsaber first appeared in "The Gathering," the sixth episode of animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars fifth season.[4] The lightsaber's hilt and assembly first appeared in the next episode, "A Test of Strength."[1] Concept art for Petro's lightsaber from the Trivia Gallery for "A Test of Strength" revealed the design of lightsaber assembly was inspired by the "Build Your Own Lightsaber" activity center found at The Star Trader shop at Disney Parks.[11] Concept art for all six younglings lightsaber hilts, including Petro's was posted to the Star Wars: The Clone Wars Facebook page on November 25, 2012.[12]
