History

using the lightsaber to battle .

Palpatine using the lightsaber to battle Luke Skywalker.

In his lab on the Imperial throne-world, Palpatine kept a number of stolen Jedi lightsabers in case he needed them, one of which was blue-bladed.[1]

In 10 ABY, Luke Skywalker destroyed all but one of Palpatine's clones, but Palpatine's essence moved into the one clone that Luke hadn't destroyed yet and the newly-possessed clone grabbed his blue-bladed lightsaber from the wall of the lab and used it to duel Luke. He won the duel and got Luke to turn to the dark side and become his apprentice.[1]

Later in 10 ABY, he discovered onboard his Super Star Destroyer Eclipse that Luke renounced the dark side thanks to the efforts of his twin sister, Leia Organa Solo. Enraged, Palpatine used his blue-bladed lightsaber to attack Luke. Despite the Emperor's ferocious power, he was caught off guard by Skywalker, losing his hand to his opponents's weapon and dropping his own. Mere minutes later, the Eclipse was destroyed along with Palpatine's clone and the stolen lightsaber.[2]

Behind the scenes

While Cam Kennedy's comic panel art throughout Dark Empire portrays Palpatine's lightsaber as blue-bladed, Dave Dorman's cover art for Dark Empire 6 portrays it as red, though this inconsistency in blade color between page and cover also exists for Luke and Leia's sabers (red and blue, respectively, to green). In addition, Star Wars Handbook 3: Dark Empire depicts the young Palpatine clone wielding a green-bladed lightsaber.
