The painting of the Mortis gods[2] was an image of the Mortis Force wielders, the Daughter, Father, and Son, on the Lothal Jedi Temple. The painting served as a portal to the World Between Worlds.[1]
In 1 BBY, when the Galactic Empire took over the ruins of the Lothal temple and began excavating it as part of research helmed by Mortisologist Veris Hydan, the scholar was unable to deduce the painting's meaning, although he did recognize it as important and similar to symbols and iconography included in a a report from the Jedi Archives.[1]
However, the Jedi Ezra Bridger was able to use a key stone given to him by Loth-wolves to decrypt the painting, and he used the Force to open the portal.[1] Hydan and his forces were unable to stop Bridger from entering the World Between Worlds through the gateway that was the painting, but were able to capture Bridger's associate, the Mandalorian Sabine Wren. Hydan attempted to learn the truth about the painting from Wren, but when Bridger later returned from the Force realm, the portal was closed and the entire site was engulfed in a chasm.[3]
