A pain damper was a type of specialized cybernetic nerve implant that allowed an individual to tune out extreme fatigue and pain. Originally designed to help beings in physically taxing positions, especially those that required long hours and keen attention to stay functional, initial users of pain dampers included disaster response technicians, asteroid miners, and aerospace traffic controllers. Their use spread throughout the galactic intelligence community, however, when spies found that pain dampers allowed an individual to withstand incredible amounts of interrogation and torture.[1]
