"Independent commerce is the backbone of Corellian culture. Every sentient being should be free to make his way in the universe. The Open Shipping Consortium seeks to enrich this system's discreet-shipping climate with fresh ideas, technology and manpower."
―The Open Shipping Consortium[1]

The Open Shipping Consortium, abbreviated OSC, was an organization charged with representing and protecting the commercial interests of Corellian freighter pilots during the Galactic Civil War. Rather progressive, the Open Shipping Consortium competed with the conservative Corellian Discreet Shipping Industry Chamber of Commerce (CDSICoC). The OSC was favorable to the opening of Corellian shipping lanes to offworlders while the CDSICoC was firmly opposed to this measure. The Open Shipping Consortium considered that commerce should be as open as possible and argued that such reform would enrich Corellian pilots. After the Battle of Yavin, the rivalry between the two organizations escalated into conflict.[1] In 1 ABY,[2] when a freighter dumped several cargoes of dangerous animals into populated areas of Corellia, each organization blamed pilots affiliated with its concurrent to be responsible for the situation. Then, both the OSC and the CDSICoC recruited spacers to hunt the creatures.[1][3]

Behind the scenes

The Open Shipping Consortium was mentioned in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[4] The Open Shipping Consortium was mentioned in two missions called "Corellian Discreet Shipping Industry Chamber of Commerce Menace Again" and "Powermongers Throttle Free Commerce" available on mission terminals on Corellia.[1][3]

  2. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
