- "Located in the western reaches of Grumani sector, Obica isn't considered particularly strategic by any of the known parties at odds in the region. But the world is noteworthy as the holy world of the Spumani, a site of annual pilgrimages and seemingly semi-annual wars."
- ―A cartographical survey and field report by Vannar Treece
Obica was an Outer Rim Territories planet located in the Grumani sector. The holy world of the Spumani religion, it was the site of regular pilgrimages and even more frequent wars. At one point, access to the planet was controlled by the Spumani-affiliated Scholastic Guardians; centuries later, during the New Sith Wars, the Galactic Republic was no longer aware of the state of affairs on Obica. When the Rebel Alliance was preparing for the Battle of Endor of 4 ABY, the Sullustan Home Guard officer Syub Snunb rendezvoused with the Rebel Command Fleet near Obica, from where he then led it to the Sullust system.
Description
- "Tanta Aurek derives its name from the fact that it and Tanta Besh appear to be a double star in the skies of Obica, though the two systems are actually far apart."
- ―A cartographical survey and field report by Vannar Treece
Obica was a terrestrial[4] planet[5] situated in the Obica system,[1] within the western reaches of[4] the Grumani sector[1] that lay in the Trailing Sectors portion of[2] the Outer Rim Territories.[1] The Tanta Aurek and Tanta Besh systems appeared to be a double star from the skies of Obica, leading to the former's naming.[4]
History
- "Centuries ago, access to Obica was controlled by the feared Scholastic Guardians, who would interrogate visitors to ensure they were members of the Spumani faithful."
- ―A cartographical survey and field report by Vannar Treece
At one point, the group known as the Scholastic Guardians, who had a fearsome reputation, controlled access to Obica and subjected any visitors to interrogation in order to ensure that they were faithful members of the Spumani, a breakaway branch of[4] the Children of Mani religion.[6] Centuries later,[4] by 1032 BBY,[7] Jedi Master Vannar Treece noted in a cartographical survey and field report on the Grumani sector that the Galactic Republic was not aware of the current situation on Obica, although[4] he[8] also commented that none of the sector's conflicting parties of the New Sith Wars at the time considered the world to be of particular strategic importance.[4]
Syub Snunb rendezvoused with the Rebel Command Fleet near Obica to lead it to the Sullust system.
During the preparation of the Rebel Alliance assault on the Galactic Empire's second Death Star battle station[9] in 4 ABY,[10] the entire Alliance Fleet was to assemble in the Sullust system[9] of the Grumani sector's neighboring Brema sector.[11] Syub Snunb, an officer of the Sullustan Home Guard fleet, was selected to lead the Rebel Command Fleet to the Sullust system[9] and to that end rendezvoused with the Rebel leaders at a point near Obica.[12] There, the Rebels thoroughly checked Snunb out, and, when they were satisfied that they were not walking into a trap, the Alliance forces followed the Sullustan officer to the planet Sullust.[9]
Inhabitants
Obica was notable for being the holy world of the Spumani. It was visited annually by pilgrims and saw the occurrence of wars that, according to Vannar Treece, apparently took place twice as often as the pilgrimages.[4]
Behind the scenes
Obica was first mentioned in the Dark Empire Sourcebook, Michael Allen Horne's 1993 sourcebook published by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[9] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Obica system, and therefore the planet itself, in grid square M-17.[3]
