"There's got to be a way to back out of the race and not look like a total numnoid."
―Kazuda Xiono[1]

"Numnoid" was an insult.[1] In 34 ABY,[2] the Resistance spy Kazuda Xiono was assigned to investigate First Order activity aboard the Colossus refueling station on[1] the planet[3] Castilon. During his first day on the station, Xiono was unwillingly volunteered to race against one of the platform's Ace Squadron pilots, an elite group of pilots that raced for entertainment and protected the station. The Resistance spy contemplated a way out of the competition without making himself seem like a "numnoid."[1]

Behind the scenes

"Numnoid" first appeared in part two of the two-part episode "The Recruit,"[1] the first episode of the first season of the animated television series Star Wars Resistance, which aired on October 7, 2018.[4] In Vanessa Rubio-Barreau's junior novel Star Wars Resistance: Le Nouvel Espion, a French adaptation of "The Recruit"[5] that released January 26, 2019,[6] "numnoid" is replaced with "poule mouillée,"[5] which describes a person without courage.[7] In Rubio-Barreau's junior novel Star Wars Resistance: Triples Ténèbres,[8] an April 17, 2019[9] French adaptation of[8] the third[4] Star Wars Resistance episode—"The Triple Dark"[8]—that premiered October 14, 2018,[4] the word "numnoid" is instead replaced with "petite brindille,"[8] or "little[10] twig."[11]
