The New Republic Cruiser was a series of cruisers that were in service to the New Republic. Several such vessels[1] were part of the New Republic Home Fleet. They, along with the rest of the fleet, were destroyed in the Hosnian Cataclysm when the First Order's Starkiller Base,[2] a superweapon built out of the Unknown Regions planet Ilum,[3] fired its phantom energy beam, destroying the star system. At least one ship was physically reminiscent of Mon Calamari Star Cruiser designs and had a bulbous hull, engines, and a large fin on the port and starboard. Another was more circular, but was also characterized by a bulbous hull.[2]

Behind the scenes

"That was kinda why the SWBTN video was pretty vague with the naming of those ships. It's risky naming something if you don't know what it is."
―Lucasfilm Story Group member Leland Chee[4]

The New Republic Cruiser first appeared in the 2015 Star Wars saga film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams.[2] They were first identified in an installment of Star Wars By the Numbers on StarWarsKids.com in July 31, 2020.[1] Lucasfilm Story Group member and Keeper of the Holocron Leland Chee mentioned that he had yet to witness a decent reference for the models,[5] which was why the Star Wars By the Numbers video was vague in naming the New Republic Cruiser.[4]

Fellow Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo later mentioned that he would not be surprised if some of the models were modified Star Tours assets, but that he could be mistaken.[6] The update to Star Tours required the need to create computer generated versions of the classic ships, including the Mon Calamari cruisers and the EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigates. As such, these digital assets may have been reused to create the New Republic Home Fleet.[7] Phil Szostak believed that the ships may have been brought from Industrial Light & Magic's digital library, with some possible in the form of 2D cards, but that he could also be mistaken.[8]

They might have been reused in this case." (original link is obsolete)
