- "I'm hereby informing you, therefore, that I will be returning to Wayland … and will be assuming command of your Mount Tantiss project."
"The Mount Tantiss project?"
"Yes. Oh, I know about it, Captain. Despite your petty efforts to conceal the truth from me." - ―Joruus C'baoth and Grand Admiral Thrawn
The Mount Tantiss project was a secret cloning project carried out by Grand Admiral Thrawn during his reemergence to the galaxy. With the ranks of Imperial military personnel, including officers, pilots, and soldiers, drained by conflicts between Imperial warlords, Thrawn set out to find new ways to regain the military strength the Empire once had. After discovering a secret storehouse on the planet Wayland established by Emperor Palpatine, Thrawn was able to add thousands of Spaarti cloning cylinders to remake new personnel.
Thrawn was able to select several genetic templates, from the legendary Baron Soontir Fel,[5] Lieutenant Creb the commanding officer of Black Wing Squadron, the ruthless Corporal Terkuss,[1] and possibly the famed Imperial hero General Maximilian Veers.[5] Thrawn also attempted to create a super-commando, selecting Grodin Tierce as a perfect subject. Thrawn desired a soldier with his tactical brilliance as well as honed physical ability, but ultimately left the project after losing hope in its success.[3]
