- "The echoes of the Fanged God can be heard throughout the air of Dathomir, from the sound of the snuffling moogs hidden in their lairs to the screeches of the archixes circling their aeries atop the Singing Mountain."
- ―An extract from Wild Power by Mother Talzin
Moogs were a small non-sentient species of creatures indigenous to the planet Dathomir that were the favored food of the reptomammalian rancors. They were known to be quite difficult to catch as they were both swift and fast-moving animals.[1] They made a snuffling sound and lived in lairs. Mother Talzin of the Nightsister coven of Dathomir Witches mentioned the creatures in her manifesto, Wild Power, comparing their snuffles to the echoes of the Fanged God,[2] a being of the dark side of the Force who resided in the realm of Mortis[3] and was worshipped by the Nightsisters as a deity.[2]
Wild Power was one of many writings collected in the Book of Sith, a Sith historical book assembled by Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious sometime between 19 BBY and 18 BBY.[2] The term to "play moog-and-rancor" referred to a situation in which one party was chasing another, specifically during dogfights.[4]
Behind the scenes
Moogs were first mentioned in Dark Nest I: The Joiner King, the first novel in Star Wars: The Dark Nest Trilogy, written by Troy Denning and published in 2005.[5]
