Merumeru, a Wookiee Elder, wielded a battle staff in combat. The staff was brown and roughly half the height of Merumeru. He used the staff in 19 BBY during the Clone Wars, when the Confederacy of Independent Systems invaded the Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk. Merumeru gathered a group of soldiers and, holding the staff aloft, he roared for his soldiers to charge into battle against the Separatists.
Description
The battle staff that the Wookiee Elder Merumeru owned was brown in color and roughly half of the Wookiee's height, and could be wielded as a melee weapon with one hand.[1]
History
Merumeru's staff was used in battle in 19 BBY during the Clone Wars, when Merumeru led a group of volunteer soldiers in the defense of his homeworld, Kashyyyk, against an invasion launched by the Confederacy of Independent Systems. During the battle, Merumeru and his volunteer soldiers waited behind a barricade on the beachfront of the city Kachirho for the Separatists to attack. When the Separatists arrived, Merumeru stood atop the barricade, waved his staff in the air, and roared, and he and the volunteer soldiers charged into battle.[2]
Behind the scenes
Merumeru's battle staff first appeared in the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.[2] A promotional picture of Merumeru wielding the staff was later printed in several sources.[3][4] The weapon was eventually identified as a battle staff in Merumeru's entry in the StarWars.com Databank,[1] and was mentioned in The Clone Wars Campaign Guide as a weapon that could be used by players of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game.[5]
During the filming of Merumeru's scenes for Revenge of the Sith, Axel Dench, who played the Wookiee, used a prop that looked like a long wand in place of the staff. The wand was later altered using computer-generated imagery to look like a battle staff.[6]
