- "We tried everything else on this guy, Jos—macromolecular regeneration, nanocell implants, maser cauterization—nothing worked."
- ―Zan Yant, to Jos Vondar, about N'do Maetrecis's ailment
Maser cauterization was a medical procedure in use by the time of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[1] It partially shared its name with masers, a type of energy weapon similar to lasers.[2] In 20 BBY,[3] the Republic's Major N'do Maetrecis contracted an unknown disease from the swamps of the planet Drongar[4] after receiving a heart transplant from Republic Mobile Surgical Unit personnel. Medical staff tried the cauterization technique and other proposed solutions to cure him, though each was unsuccessful and the officer's state deteriorated. Maetrecis ultimately only recovered after Doctor Zan Yant began giving him illegal dosages of the healing plant bota, which the surgeon Jos Vondar scolded his colleague for.[1]
Behind the scenes
Maser cauterization was mentioned in the 2004 novel MedStar I: Battle Surgeons, which was written by by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry as the first installment of the MedStar Duology.[1] In the real world, masers are devices that emit microwave radiation.[5]
