"A lot of shippers out here put freshly minted low-value coins in with their crates. It's a good-luck thing, as well as a way to make sure the dates on the manifest don't get altered. They take them out and put in new ones whenever that crate comes back to them."
―Eli N. Vanto explains marker coins to Colonel Mosh Barris[1]

Marker coins were low-value coins that shippers operating in and around the Wild Space put within their shipping crates as a good-luck thing. The coins were freshly minted in order to make sure the dates on the cargo manifest were not altered, and the shippers replaced then with new coins every time the shipping crate was returned to them. While investigating Thrawn's exile planet for smugglers Imperial forces happened upon Chiss's abode that contained shipping crates with hidden marker coins. Discovering the coins being from the beginning of the Clone Wars, Cadet Eli N. Vanto theorized that the owner of the encampment had been there for some years, if they got the crates new.
