"It seems we have a Mandalorian standoff, doesn't it?"
Obi-Wan Kenobi, to Reynar[1]

A Mandalorian standoff was a term used to describe a confrontation in which neither side could win.

History

During the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic forces battled the Confederacy of Independent Systems on Antolus I. During the confrontation, the Separatists tested a new type of land mine with such a destructive power that it created a volcano on the unstable planet. Although both parties first fought to the point of reaching a Mandalorian standoff, the unexpected side effect of the weapon compelled the Republic and Separatist forces to temporarily forgo their enmity, and work together to leave the planet alive.

Behind the scenes

The term is an allusion to the real world expression "Mexican Standoff"- a confrontation where no strategy exists that allows any party to achieve victory. In films, the trope of a Mexican Standoff often occurs between characters holding each other at gunpoint. However, the term has been used in other contexts, such as the threat of nuclear war between the United States and Soviet Union during the Cold War.
