A laser pointer was a device used to project a harmless laser to use as a highlighter during presentations and briefings. The 3D-4X administrative droid had a laser pointer built into its right index finger as a standard feature. Some R2-series astromech droids could be modified with laser pointers due to the ease with which the series could be upgraded.[1]
