The LRD-series envoy droid filled a unique role in the protocol droid market. Designed with enhanced independence and reinforced loyalty protocols, it spoke on behalf of its owner without requiring supervision. Although sending a droid in place of a living envoy was often seen as an insult, the Rebellion frequently accepted this risk to protect its agents, using LRD-series units for dangerous or uncertain meetings.[1]
Unlike most envoy droids, the LRD-series earned a degree of respect thanks to its advanced mimic circuits, which allowed it to replicate its master's voice and mannerisms with remarkable accuracy. Its high cost and sophistication meant its presence was often viewed as nearly equivalent to that of its owner.[1]
Behind the scenes
LRD-series envoy droid was first mentioned in Desperate Allies, a roleplaying supplementary sourcebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying series that was published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2015.[1]
