LR-16 heavy cannon battery

The LR-16 heavy cannon battery was a massive artillery cannon employed by the Galactic Republic during the Great Galactic War, Cold War, the following Galactic War and possibly in further conflicts afterwards. One of the battlefields, where these cannons were used successfully was the Battle of Ilum^[1] during which a pair of LR-16s defended Fray Landing Base against the Sith imperial attackers.^[3]

Characteristics

The LR-16 heavy cannon battery was armed with a primary, long-range artillery cannon that fired superheated plasma to a range of up to 27km and included variable beam settings for different targets. The secondary armament consisted of a pair of dual turbolasers to defend against enemy aircraft which had a range of up to 8km.^[1]

The cannon required a minimum crew of one but, depending on the main cannons beam settings, could be increased to a crew of four.^[1]

Usage

Like all forms of long-range weaponry that was not mounted onto vehicles, the LR-16 was operated by dedicated and competitive artillery units, often referred to as Cannon wranglers.^[1]

The LR-16 itself saw moderately widespread use, having been employed most prominently on Ilum.^[1] A pair of very similar, if not identical cannon emplacements were also used at the Alliance base on Odessen.^[2]

Behind the scenes

The in-game model of the LR-16 appears again atop the Spears of Organa on Alderaan where they are described as "ancient defense turrets" and as such unlikely to be the same weapon.^[4] Similarly they are seen during the Alderaan Civil War Warzone where they are again used as defensive turrets employed against starships.^[5]
