Khipu, also known as talking knots, were knotted strings that recorded data. The knots on a khipu could be tied in over six million unique knots with each one reading as specific deformation of a circle in a three-dimensional space. Any droid with a basic analytical drive could unravel each knot's linking integral to translate the khipu into letters or numbers. The elusive weapons dealer Iram Radique that operated out of the Cog Hive Seven prison paid his inmate associates with polymer filaments tied into khipus. Each khipu could be translated into a twenty-one digit number. The first twelve digits made up an ID reference for an IGBC account on Muunilinst, the last nine were the account's password.

Behind the scenes

Khipus are directly inspired by the quipu recording system used by the Inca and other cultures of Andean South America. While quipu is the most common spelling used in Spanish and English, khipu is one of the spelling variations used in Quechua.
