"I am concerned about the effect this prototype dark armor could have on your physical body, as well as that of your brother."
―B-2ON, to Am[1]

Karre's Dark Lord armor was the prototype dark armor used by Karre, a Dark Lord of the T-Empire. At some point after the Battle of Exegol of 35 ABY, Karre wore his armor while stealing the power core and the kyber crystal within it from a Gemini-class Star Destroyer's reactor core chamber. At the same time, the protocol droid B-2ON told Karre's twin sister Am about the dark energy that powered her own dark armor, as well as Karre's, and expressed concern about how their armor could affect their bodies. After taking the power core, Karre made his way to a hangar to escape the Star Destroyer, where he was confronted by Am, who attempted to convince him to return the power core. Karre refused, throwing his helmet to the floor and destroying his armor.

Description

"High-purity energy must be extracted from our power source in the central core. It is the same power that is transferred into the dark armor that you and your brother, Master Karre, wear."
―B-2ON, to Am[1]

Karre's Dark Lord armor[3] was the prototype dark armor used by Karre,[1] a Dark Lord in the army of a remnant of the Galactic Empire known as the T-Empire.[3] The armor was black and included a helmet and cape. Its face and shoulders were partially outlined in orange, and a white line partially surrounded the base of the neck. Multiple red and green rectangular buttons were located on a chest box. Another button near the right shoulder activated a self-destruct mechanism. The armor was powered by dark energy.[1]

History

"Now, hand it over."
"I refuse!"
―Am and Karre, just before Karre destroys his armor[1]

At some point after the Battle of Exegol of 35 ABY,[2] Karre wore his armor while aboard a Gemini-class Star Destroyer as the final adjustments to the Star Destroyer and its planet-destroying hyper cannon superweapon were being completed. The hyper cannon, Karre's armor, and the dark armor used by his twin sister Am were all powered by a kyber crystal kept in the Star Destroyer's reactor core chamber. As Karre had seen a vision of Am's death due to her use of the kyber crystal, he stole the power core containing the crystal in order to save her.[1]

At the same time, Am's protocol droid, B-2ON, reported to her about the status of the adjustments being made to the Star Destroyer. B-2ON explained to her that high-purity energy was extracted from the power source in the Star Destroyer's central core, and that the dark energy that would be unleashed through the hyper cannon was the same power that was transferred to the twins' dark armor. B-2ON then expressed concern about the effects Am and Karre's dark armor could have on their bodies, though Am told the droid not to worry.[1]

Karre continued to wear his armor as he walked to a hangar, where he planned to escape from the Star Destroyer. In the hangar, Am confronted Karre and attempted to convince him to return the power core. Karre refused, removing his helmet and throwing it to the floor. He then pressed a button on his armor to destroy it. With his astromech droid R-DUO's help, Karre escaped the Star Destroyer and destroyed both the kyber crystal and Am's dark armor, saving her life after it overloaded.[1]

Behind the scenes

"What makes Star Wars 'Star Wars' is the aesthetics and unity of production design created by Ralph McQuarrie. We used this as our foundation, then experimented and pushed it until we created a design of our own that works for the story we wanted to tell."
―Hiromi Wakabayashi, on designing Karre's Dark Lord Armor and other elements of "THE TWINS."[1]

Karre's Dark Lord Armor first appeared in "THE TWINS," a short film written by Hiromi Wakabayashi and released as part of the first volume of the non-canon Star Wars: Visions series. The animated short, produced by Studio Trigger,[1] was released on September 22, 2021.[4] Prior to the short's release, it was first depicted in both the original Japanese and English dub trailers for the series, which were both uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 17 of that year.[5][6] Karre's Dark Lord Armor was first identified in The Art of Star Wars: Visions, a 2022 reference book written by Zack Davisson.[3]

Karre's dark armor is based on designer Ralph McQuarrie's concept designs for the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Wakabayashi explained that the episode's aesthetic used McQuarrie's designs as a foundation and that they then experimented to create their own designs.[3] A StarWars.com article published on September 21, 2021 described the sound that occurred when Am's armor sprouted mechanical arms, but the article incorrectly described the tone as accompanying Karre's armor.[7] The error was repeated in "Star Wars: Visions Season One Companion," an article published in the 210th issue of the Star Wars Insider magazine[8] on May 3, 2022.[9]
