- "We found her in a Separatist prison camp after she deserted the Republic, and she paid her dues long ago."
- ―Saw Gerrera
Karama was a rebel fighter who worked under Saw Gerrera[1] by around 19 BBY.[2] During the Clone Wars between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic, Karama had three cousins killed by Separatist forces, leading to her joining the Republic as a reporter for the military news feeds. She eventually deserted the Republic, was captured by the enemy and ended up in a Separatist prison camp, and, ultimately, served with an anti-Imperial group led by Gerrera after the war ended and the Republic transformed into an Empire.[1]
Personality and traits
Karama was a determined individual. Although she did not doubt Gerrera's capability as a leader and was willing to devote herself to him, she was frustrated by his unwillingness to share his long-term plans and questioned them on one occasion. Her comrade Soujen Vak-Nhalis admired her frankness as well as her ability to admit when she was wrong.[1]
Behind the scenes
Karama appeared in the 2025 novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, written by Alexander Freed as the first installment of the Star Wars: Reign of the Empire trilogy.[1] On September 20, 2024, Tom Hoeler teased the characters of Karama and Chemish,[3] who are both featured in The Mask of Fear,[4] as characters he was excited for fans to meet in "the not too distant future."[3]

Rebecca Roanhorse (@rebeccaroanhorse) on Instagram (post): "Title and updated release date of my upcoming STAR WARS novel announced at SDCC. THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS takes place a year before Andor S1." (backup link) states that Edge of the Abyss takes place a year before the events of Andor Season 1, which are set in 5 BBY per the reasoning here. Therefore, the events of Edge of the Abyss must be set in 6 BBY, and the events of The Mask of Fear in 19 BBY.
