A crest was the emblem of the Jedi Order. It was similar to the emblem used by the Galactic Republic during the Great Galactic War.[1]
The emblem existed at least as early as 115 BBY, appearing on the cover of the third edition of The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force.[2] By 22 BBY, it was widely used on Jedi armor worn during the Clone Wars.[3]
Behind the scenes
The symbol of the Legacy era.
According to a 2006 blog post by Leland Chee, the "Jedi logo" was originally created for use in real-world merchandise. It appeared for the first time as an in-universe emblem in 2004's The New Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology,[4] identifying the Jedi Order as a manufacturer.[5]
The symbol was later used to represent the Legacy era in publishing, starting with the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force series of novels, and was also used without a surrounding circle to denote the Jedi Order in The Clone Wars film and television series.[3]
In the later Canon continuity, the symbol would continue to be used to represent the Jedi Order. It made its first appearance in a numbered Star Wars film within one of the sacred Jedi texts in 2017's Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi.[6][7]
