- "I raced for myself. For the fame and the glory. But he was racing for something more."
"His family."
"So you know about them?"
"Yeah. He had a wife and daughter. Yeager never talks about them." - ―Marcus Speedstar and Kazuda Xiono talk about Jarek Yeager's family, including his daughter
A human female was the daughter of the racer Jarek Yeager and his wife. The daughter was killed around 20 ABY, along with their mother, in an accident during a racing event in which their father raced alongside his brother, Marcus Speedstar. Speedstar would crash his racing starfighter after recklessly spiking his racer with coaxium hyperfuel, resulting in the deaths of the daughter and her mother. Yeager held his brother responsible for the fate of his family, and the resulting feud between them lasted for many years, until Speedstar tracked down Yeager on the Colossus refueling station on the planet Castilon in 34 ABY, and Yeager accepted his apology.
Biography
Early life
- "Yeager had a family."
- ―Kazuda Xiono discovers the photograph of Yeager with his daughter
Jarek Yeager's daughter with their parents on Batuu
A human[2] female was the daughter of the racer Jarek Yeager and his wife.[3] At some point, the daughter was photographed with both parents on[2] the planet[4] Batuu.[5] Yeager, a former pilot in the New Republic Defense Fleet, left the military following its downsizing and became a racer to earn a living for his wife and daughter.[3]
Around 20 ABY,[1] the family attended a race that both Yeager and his brother Marcus Speedstar were participating in. In an attempt to beat his older brother, Speedstar used heavy amounts of[3] volatile[4] coaxium to fuel his racer. During the race, the coaxium-fueled ship combusted and crashed, killing Yeager's daughter and wife in the process. The incident led to Yeager and Speedstar becoming estranged for over ten years;[3] Yeager held Speedstar responsible for the accident,[4] and Speedstar initially refused to apologize.[3]
Legacy
- "You might not have realized it, but he thinks of you like a daughter, Tam. Losing one was painful enough."
- ―Venisa Doza tells Tamara Ryvora about Yeager's caring for her
Yeager kept the photograph of his family on Batuu in his repair station onboard the Colossus refueling station on the[2] planet[4] Castilon.[2] During his time on the Colossus, Yeager came to care for the mechanic Tamara Ryvora, who was part of his team, and came to think of her almost like a daughter.[6] After sneaking into Yeager's station[2] in 34 ABY,[7] the Resistance operative Kazuda Xiono, who was working for Yeager, discovered the photo of Yeager with his wife and daughter. Xiono was interested by the photo, as he had not known about Yeager's family.[2]
Speedstar hoped to apologize to Yeager for the incident.
Later that year,[7] Speedstar arrived on the Colossus to participate in the Platform Classic race. While there, he attempted to reconnect with his brother, but Yeager continued to shun him, having not forgiven him for his role in his daughter's death. After witnessing the siblings' feud, Xiono spoke with Speedstar and learned about the tragedy. During the Platform Classic—which Yeager also entered to compete against his brother—Speedstar admitted he had been too ashamed to apologize following the accident and pleaded with Yeager to forgive him, telling his brother he had been searching for him and wanted the chance to apologize. Yeager accepted the apology, and after the race, the two brothers hugged: when Speedstar asked if they were good, Yeager stated that they would be one day soon.[3]
Later that year,[8] Yeager's former colleague, the pilot Venisa Doza, was captured by the First Order. During her time aboard the Star Destroyer[6] Thunderer,[4] Doza met Ryvora, who had since left the Colossus to become a First Order pilot following a falling-out with Yeager. While escaping the Thunderer and using Ryvora as a hostage, Doza learned of the First Order pilot's circumstances, informing her that even if she did not realize it, Yeager missed her and thought of her like a daughter. The Resistance pilot added that Yeager was in enough pain from losing his real daughter.[6]
Personality and traits
Yeager's daughter had dark skin, black hair, and brown eyes.[2]
Equipment
During the family's trip to Batuu, the daughter wore yellow overalls, white shoes, a white top, and silver bracelets on both arms.[2]
Behind the scenes
Development
- "I think that Yeager sort of, essentially […] almost adopted her in a way like, [sic] you know really became this father figure, and I think that his concern in terms of his family and just, you know, how dangerous racing is, I think he sort of intentionally kind of kept her grounded out of fear."
- ―Brandon Auman describes Yeager's relationship to Tam Ryvora and how his daughter's fate impacted it
Jarek Yeager's daughter first appeared in a photograph in "Fuel for the Fire," the fourth episode of the first season of the animated television series Star Wars Resistance,[2] which aired on October 21, 2018.[10] The photo of the family was created by artist Kilian Plunkett.[11]
Yeager's backstory was fleshed out in "The Platform Classic."
Although the daughter's existence was revealed in "Fuel for the Fire," the story of the family was not divulged until later in the episode "The Platform Classic,"[12] the first season's ninth episode, which aired on November 25, 2018.[10] Kevin Burke, one of the two writers for the episode, felt that the heart of the episode, as well as the character of Yeager at large, was about handling regret, overcoming loss, and dealing with personal darkness, all of which the audience experiences through his stoic and guarded perspective. Burke noted that Star Wars stories overall are best at deeply exploring characters, something that often goes beyond what viewers initially think.[12]
Resistance head writer and executive producer Brandon Auman spoke about how Yeager's family impacted the relationships with his found family on the Colossus. He declared that Yeager was more protective of those he cared about due to the loss of his family, including his daughter. Auman felt that Yeager took on the role of a father figure for Ryvora,[9] something "Rendezvous Point"[6]—the eighth episode of Season Two, which aired on November 24, 2019[10]—acknowledges,[6] and believed that Yeager was hesitant to let her fly due to knowing the risks associated with racing.[9]
Cast commentary
- "… if there's one takeaway from the episode it's that, do you know what I mean. It's an episode about regret and overcoming loss, and that's very much the heart of it and the heart of this character."
- ―Kevin Burke
The show's cast agreed that Jarek Yeager's family backstory was hugely important.
In the episode commentary for "The Platform Classic" included in the DVD compilation of Season One, voice actors Christopher Sean, who portrays Xiono; Josh Brener, who portrays Neeku Vozo; Scott Lawrence, who portrays Yeager; and Myrna Velasco, who portrays Torra Doza, discussed their thoughts on Yeager's backstory involving his wife and daughter. Brener noted that Yeager, a private and closed-off character, having his life story being told to everyone was a dramatic struggle for him. Sean felt that it was one of his favorite storylines in the show and recalled being emotionally moved by the episode. Lawrence agreed, saying that it was one of the heavier topics in the show's first season, which Sean furthered by adding that the narrative helped explain why Yeager was on the Colossus.[13] As Burke noted, Yeager's rich backstory is what makes viewers truly appreciate him,[12] something that Sean also pointed out.[13]
Sean and Velasco spoke on the scene where Yeager partly accepts Speedstar's apology and connected with Yeager's stance of appreciating the gesture but admitting that he needed more time for them to be "good." Sean felt that the honesty in Yeager's words was important, while Velasco pointed to Yeager still being willing to thank Speedstar for the gesture as being equally valuable. They asserted that the situation of being angry at someone who needs your help is a relatable struggle for viewers. Overall, the cast agreed that the episode emphasized the importance of family togetherness and love, one of the main themes of the show.[13]
