"Welcome! I am Lt. Jarad Gastin. Are you here to donate to the Alliance for its war on the tyrannical Empire?"
―Lieutenant Jarad Gastin, to a Rebel sympathizer[1]

Jarad Gastin was a male Sullustan officer of the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. After the Battle of Yavin, Lieutenant Gastin was stationed on the planet Tatooine and operated out of a tavern in the city of Anchorhead.[1] In this notorious Rebel stronghold,[2] he collected credit contributions from Rebel sympathizers eager to support the war effort.[1] During 1 ABY,[3] Jarad Gastin received a generous donation of one million credits from an unknown spacer.[1]

Behind the scenes

Jarad Gastin was a non-player character in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[4] Major Lt. Jarad Gastin was added to the game with the release of the Game Update 9, on April 30, 2009. He was one of the three NPCs (along with Major Caleb Knolar and Ozzmos Roberts) added with the update that were used as credit sinks to remove money from the game economy and combat inflation.[5] For paying one million credits, the player received the player title "Rebel Sympathizer."[1]

  3. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
