An identification pad was a type of datapad used by the Galactic Empire. It incorporated a sensor pad that could read an individual's thumbprint, and then return information on them by accessing background data, criminal records, or military history. The device's sensor pad was easily fooled by any type of oil or waxy residue smeared over a thumb, returning a inconclusive result. Smugglers took advantage of the weakness by running their thumbs over their eyes, ears, noses or mouths to pick up ear wax or grease residue to fool the sensor.[1]
