- "Some mechanic I am. I checked the hyperdrive converter before we left…but we stalled mid-jump. Those pirates were right here waiting."
- ―Blanch Sproull, to Beilert Valance
A hyperdrive converter was a component of a hyperdrive[1]—a propulsion system that allowed a starship to reach lightspeed.[2] Before the Rebel Alliance[1] transport Spirit of Jedha[3] left[1] the rebel outpost on the planet Lowik[4] in 3 ABY,[5] the mechanic Private Blanch Sproull checked the ship's hyperdrive converter. As the Spirit of Jedha was mid–hyperspace jump, however, the transport stalled,[1] dropping it out of hyperspace[3] along the Terminus Hyperspace Route[6] where it came under attack from pirates of the Ohnaka Gang.[1]
Unbeknownst to Sproull, the Spirit of Jedha's commander—Commander Hill Purpura—had sabotaged the ship's hyperdrive motivator after becoming disillusioned with the rebel cause.[6] That year,[5] Sproull told the bounty hunter Beilert Valance about their checking of the hyperdrive converter—believing that was the case of the transport's malfunction—while they guarded Valance as he was imprisoned aboard the Spirit of Jedha.[1] The mechanic later discovered the sabotaged motivator, as well as Purpura's involvement in the incident.[6]
Behind the scenes
A hyperdrive converter was mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in the ninth issue of the 2020 comic series Star Wars: Bounty Hunters. The issue was written by Ethan Sacks and published by Marvel Comics[1] on January 27, 2021.[7] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, a hyperdrive converter was first mentioned in the novelization of the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, which was written by Terry Brooks and published in 1999.[8]
