Holenesh Canyon was a kilometer-deep canyon on the planet Ilum, which a strange Force anomaly was centered upon, manifesting in a fluctuation occurring about every one hundred standard years. The canyon was located about five hundred kilometers from the primary Jedi temple on the planet, where the entrance to the Crystal Cave was located. After its discovery by the Jedi Holenesh, the Jedi Order established an outpost at the end of canyon, naming it after its discoverer. The outpost once had a population of one hundred sentients but was destroyed in an avalanche coinciding with the anomaly's reappearance.[2]
Though some inhabitants of the outpost escaped the groundquake, further seismic disturbances made rescue efforts impossible, and it was left abandoned underneath snow and fallen rock. Despite this, as time passed, further groundquakes and erosion exposed portions of the settlement, with the contents of the building still preserved over the millennia.[2]

As Starkiller Base and its planet were destroyed during the Battle of Starkiller Base, dated to 34 ABY by Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, the Jedi Temple on Ilum must have been destroyed by that year.
