"For decades, the baron's been fighting off a movement that would force the old royal families to either divest from corporate holdings or abdicate their titles and inheritance. He's worried that turning the Galactic Emperor into a figurehead will only encourage the anti-royalists. A provision protecting the rights of nobility is the main thing he needs, along with the lifting of some embargoes from the run-up to the war."
Hasalia Prederiko[1]

Historically Recognized Royal Families were notable noble families.[1] In 19 BBY,[2] Baron Shkan-Shkan Yew successfully lobbied for the inclusion of protections for Historically Recognized Royal Families in Imperial Senator Mon Mothma's Imperial Rebirth Act, in an attempt to resist domestic anti-monarchic pressure to force nobility to either give up their titles and inheritance or to divest from corporate holdings.[1]

Behind the scenes

Historically Recognized Royal Families were mentioned in the 2025 novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, written by Alexander Freed as the first installment of the Star Wars: Reign of the Empire trilogy.[1]

  2. PenguinRandomHouse-Logo Star Wars: Edge of the Abyss on Penguin Books' official United Kingdom website (backup link) establishes the events of Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear take place thirteen years before the events of Reign of the Empire: Edge of the Abyss. Instagram-Logo Rebecca Roanhorse (@rebeccaroanhorse) on Instagram (post): "Title and updated release date of my upcoming STAR WARS novel announced at SDCC. THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS takes place a year before Andor S1." (backup link) states that Edge of the Abyss takes place a year before the events of Andor Season 1, which are set in 5 BBY per the reasoning here. Therefore, the events of Edge of the Abyss must be set in 6 BBY, and the events of The Mask of Fear in 19 BBY.
