"What's the matter? Afraid of spiders?"
Zeelius Kraymunder, to a spacer[3]

Hermit spiders were dangerous arachnoid creatures living on the planet Naboo and its moon Rori.

Biology and appearance

"Hermit spiders are solitary creatures"
―Zeelius Kraymunder, to a spacer[3]

Hermit spiders were large arachnid creatures native to the planet Naboo,[2] that could also be found on its moon Rori.[1] They were predatory,[2] aggressive and poisonous spiders.[4] These spiders were solitary creatures,[3] but they had a rigid social structure,[2] including specialized individuals such as guards and queens.[1]

Hermit spiders were likely related to nightspiders, another arachnid species from Naboo.[1]

History

"It's a simple thing. Just go and kill a hermit spider and come back as the victorious spider-slaying hero. Oh, and remember -- when you got to the mound, there were at least fifty of them, you had to lob a thermal detonator, and the carnage was fantastic."
―Zeelius Kraymunder, to a spacer[3]

Mutant hermit spiders on Naboo

After the Battle of Yavin, mutant strains of hermit spiders, larger in size, were discovered on Naboo.[4]

In 1 ABY,[5] the con artist Zeelius Kraymunder convinced Jaleela Bindoo, the organizer of the Narmle Arts Gala on Rori, that a nest of hermit spiders threatened the upcoming gala. Terrified by spiders, Bindoo accepted to fund Kraymunder to eliminate the creatures. The crook then hired a spacer to kill a hermit spider and collect the carcass. Zeelius Kraymunder later pretended that the spacer killed at least fifty spiders with a thermal detonator and brought back the dead queen.[3]

Hermit spiders appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[6] In the game, hermit spiders were virtually identical to nightspiders but no explicit relationship was established between the two species.[1]

The hermit spider later had its own entry in the 2008 reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia. The illustration used in the book for the hermit spider was directly taken from the Wookieepedia article.[2]

  5. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
