HM-12 was a legal-analyst droid in service of the Galactic Empire. In 0 ABY, when Captain Iden Versio was court-martialed for treason, the droid was tasked with defending the accused as required by Imperial Navy law. Imperial Admiral Nasha Garvan represented the prosecution. Unknown to HM-12 or anyone else outside of Iden's Inferno Squad, the treasonous acts and ensuing trial was a setup to allow Iden to infiltrate the partisan rebel group known as the Dreamers under the guise of an Imperial defector. HoloNet News reporter Alton Kastle disseminated the details of the trial via a broadcast, including HM-12's involvement. When Imperial Lieutenant Jha Eka, who served as an assistant to Iden's father and Imperial admiral Garrick Versio, watched the broadcast, he quickly informed Garrick of the news.[1]
