"Candied H'nemthe yams 3.5 credits"
―The listing for the yams at Dex's[1]

H'nemthe yams were a type of vegetable that could be used in cooking. They were served candied as a side dish to be eaten with dinner in the eatery known as Dex's Diner on the planet Coruscant. Dexter Jettster, the Besalisk chef and owner of the diner, enjoyed the dish and served portions of the yams for 3.5 credits each,[1] at some point prior to his establishment's destruction during the first two years of the Galactic Empire's rule.[2] The H'nemthe were a sentient species native to the planet of the same name.[3]

Behind the scenes

H'nemthe yams were first mentioned in the 2009 Hyperspace exclusive article, "Dining at Dex's," which was written by Gregory Walker.[1] On his blog, Walker stated that the yams were named as a reference to the character M'iiyoom Onith, a H'nemthe who was nicknamed "yam nose" on the set of the film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[4]

The New Essential Chronology states that the Empire was formed in 19 BBY, so Dex's Diner was destroyed either during 19 BBY or 18 BBY.
