- "No one leaves their pain behind. The easy moments in our lives blend together into a mushy, unmemorable pabulum. Our time without struggle means nothing in the end. But our injuries, our agonies… those we remember. They make us who we are."
- ―Gol
Gol, known as the "Wither King," was a male Force-sensitive individual who became a Sith.[1] At some point[3] he[2] bled a kyber crystal.[3] The Sith used the powers of the dark side of the Force to keep his face youthful while the rest of his body decayed. With his rotting body hidden under his armor,[5] only the hands of the Sith displayed[2] his true condition.[5] Gol was known to take prisoners. One such prisoner, a Jedi, was forced to wear jester clothing and serves as his "Jester Jedi."[4]
Eventually, the Sith's kyber crystal fell into the hands of expert Doctor Cuata.[3] Around 3 ABY,[6] the Jedi-in-training Luke Skywalker sought out Cuata to acquire a new kyber crystal for his lightsaber.[3]
As Cuata worked on his current kyber in order to make it stable, he asked Skywalker to heal the crystal that had been bled by this Sith. Skywalker was not aware of the process of how to heal the crystal, but was informed of how to by the Fallanassi Gretta, who told him he would need to deeply connect with the dark side user who bled the crystal originally. Whilst Skywalker attempted to heal the crystal, he was brought to this Sith's hall, who welcomed him and told him to approach and state his name. He then asked Skywalker how and why he had entered his hall.[3]
Behind the scenes
The Sith Lord first appeared, albeit unidentified, in a Force vision witnessed by Luke Skywalker in the thirty-fifth issue of the comic series Star Wars, written by Charles Soule, illustrated by Madibek Musabekov and Rachelle Rosenberg, and published by Marvel Comics[3] on June 7, 2023.[7] The character later returned for Star Wars 42[4] and issue 43, which collectively formed the arc The Sith and the Skywalker. With the character's three Star Wars appearances keeping a great deal secret,[2] the Sith has inspired great deal of fan intrigue.[8]
The character's gender was confirmed by Soule, who referred to the Sith Lord as a "fellow"[8] and a "gentleman" on the social media platform X.[5] Soule also confirmed on X that the character had a name that he would reveal following the release of Star Wars 43 comic series,[9] and that in his mind he knew the time period in which the Sith Lord lived in the overall Star Wars timeline.[10] After the release of the forty-third issue, Soule revealed more information about the character's physical appearance on X.[5] However, he decided against revealing the character's name, even keeping it secret as The Sith and the Skywalker's collected release came out.[11] Gol was finally identified in the 2024 Dorling Kindersley reference book Star Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy.[1]
