"There were dissidents on Anoat. No one could find it. So they gassed the planet."
―Tam Bastion, to Riley's sibling[4]

Around 0 ABY[1] the planet of Anoat was gassed by the Galactic Empire. A group of dissidents were known to have been present on Anoat, but the Empire could not find their camp. Consequently, Captain Ubrik Adelhard,[3] a junior military advisor[4] in command of his own Imperial-class Star Destroyer,[5] decided to gas the whole planet, rendering Anoat toxic and poisonous, and forcing much of the population to flee their homeworld.[3] Those who did not evacuate the planet ended up mutating, transforming into feral creatures known as Lurkers.[2] The gassing of Anoat also taught the Alliance a valuable lesson, which was to avoid operating among civilians.[3]

The Empire's official version was that Anoat had been poisoned and a few of its inhabitants "moderately damaged" by "a series of tragic industrial accidents."[6]

Behind the scenes

The gassing of Anoat was first mentioned in the 2015 video game Star Wars: Uprising, and dates the event several years before the Battle of Yavin.[2] The event was later first depicted in the 2024 comic Battle of Jakku — Insurgency Rising 1. However, Insurgency Rising 1 conflicts with Uprising's dating of the event, as the comic shows Ubrik Adelhard being summoned by Darth Vader to the Executor immediately following the event.[5] The Executor is completed shortly after the events of the comic Darth Vader (2015) 25, which is set post-Yavin and is dated to 0 ABY by the reference book Star Wars: Timelines.[7] As a result, this article treats the date of pre-Yavin as an error.[1]

Notes and references

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 Battle of Jakku — Insurgency Rising 1 depicts Ubrik Adelhard ordering the gassing of Anoat, and then being summoned to the Executor by Darth Vader immediately afterward, at which point Vader appoints him governor of the Anoat sector. Though Star Wars: Uprising states that the gassing of Anoat occurred several years prior to the Battle of Yavin, the Executor was not completed until after the Battle of Yavin as depicted in the Star Wars: Darth Vader (2015) comic series, which is set in 0 ABY per Star Wars: Timelines. As Uprising, which is set in 4 ABY, states that the gassing occurred at least several years before the events of the game, it must have occurred around 0 ABY after the Executor's completion.
