Biography
Take Your Daughter to Work Day
Rescue of Mr. Fuzzybottom
- "Gary, where is Jessica? Isn't today 'Take Your Daughter to Work Day?'"
"No one actually does that."
"Gary, you promised." - ―Gary's wife and Gary
Gary's wife reminds him about Take Your Daughter to Work Day.
By 0 BBY,[3] Gary had become a member of the Galactic Empire's Stormtrooper Corps. He had also married to his wife and fathered a daughter, Jessica.[2] In 0 BBY,[3] Gary was one of the stormtroopers that would participate in the raid on the Rebel corvette Tantive IV during the Galactic Civil War. As he prepared for work, his wife approached him, reminding him about "Take Your Daughter to Work Day." Despite his protests that "no one actually does that," he was convinced to bring Jessica to the raid on the Tantive IV nonetheless.[2]
During the raid itself, Gary ran into the Tantive IV while firing at rebels, Jessica close beside him. As they ran further in, Jessica dropped her teddy bear, Mr. Fuzzybottom, on the side of the hall oppose of them. Gary initially kept his daughter from running after her toy, but eventually gave in and went after it himself. After dodging oncoming laserfire and shooting at least one rebel, he managed to retrieve Mr. Fuzzybottom and return it to Jessica. Just after accomplishing this, however, Gary and Jessica were approached by the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Vader immediately demanded to know who Jessica was, prompting Gary to frantically explain the occasion of "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" and his wife's urging to bring her.[2]
Gary and Jessica speak to Darth Vader.
Gary continued his attempt to explain the situation to his superior, trying to invoke empathy by asking Vader if he had experience with children of his own. Ultimately, the stormtrooper stood his ground, firmly declaring to Vader that he loved his daughter after grabbing her hand. After a moment of silence, Vader leaned forward, gesturing to his own heart while informing Gary that he did, indeed, empathize. A pair of stormtroopers then brought a rebel prisoner to Vader, who interrogated the rebel regarding the whereabouts of the Death Star plans, stating that Gary never saw his daughter because of people like them. However, the Sith Lord choked the rebel to death, prompting him to apologize to Jessica for having to witness this act. He then asked if Jessica was having fun with her father, though she did not reply, timidly hiding behind Gary. Vader chuckled, jokingly stating that he knew he was scary.[2]
Falling for Force tricks
- "Daddy, you're not even trying!"
"Baby, it is 165 degrees on this planet! I can't hear in this thing! I was just repeating what I thought the guy was saying! It's not like it's my own mother[BLEEP] thought on the matter, okay?!" - ―Jessica and Gary
Gary and Jessica argue with one another.
Gary—still alongside Jessica—later deployed as a desert stormtrooper onto the surface of the planet Tatooine, where he was stationed alongside another stormtrooper in Mos Eisley. Eventually, he stopped the rogue Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, the moisture farmer Luke Skywalker, and the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 as they passed through his checkpoint. Kenobi used a mind trick on Gary, convincing him that C-3PO and R2-D2 were not the droids he was looking for despite Jessica's protests to the contrary. After Gary was coerced into letting the group pass, his daughter berated him, claiming he wasn't even trying. He attempted to reason with Jessica, reminding her of the heat and claiming he could not even hear under his helmet. After Gary's aggressive response, Jessica ran off crying, forcing him to apologetically chase after her. The stormtrooper stationed with Gary then commented that this was why they did not take their daughter to work.[2]
Personality and traits
Gary cared greatly for and loved his daughter Jessica, to the point that he was willing to risk both taking blaster-fire to save her stuffed toy and being fired by Darth Vader to defend her presence during a mission. He was also protective of her, ordering her to keep her head down during the raid on the Tantive IV and preventing her from running into blaster fire herself. However, he also expressed frustration and reluctance toward having her accompany him to work and snapped at her out of frustration at least once.[2]
Equipment
Gary was equipped with a full set of stormtrooper armor,[2] the helmet of which he even wore to bed alongside boxers.[1] When in combat, he wielded an E-11 blaster rifle.[2]
Behind the scenes
Gary first appeared in a sketch from the 2008 sketch comedy special Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II. The character was voiced by Donald Faison.[2] Faison reprised his role as the character in the 2010 sequel Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III.[1] Gary's role in the Tatooine scene of the skit in Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II serves the same role[2] as the desert stormtrooper DSS-0956.[4]
