Fuel pods were supplemental fuel tanks connected to the sublight drive of an X-wing starfighter. This gave the pilot an extended mission time plus enough fuel to escape any gravity wells and a safe return to hyperspace.
Around 7 ABY, Rogue Squadron attached fuel pods to their ships before the Second Battle of Borleias. Equipped with a quick release system to jettison the empty pods, they provided the X-Wings with an additional forty five minutes of flight time. Corellian pilot Lieutenant Corran Horn used his malfunctioning fuel pod as an impromptu missile and destroyed a pursuing TIE starfighter.
