- "I'll be broggled."
"What?"
"[Thrawn is] right. It's signed with formal Frunchy script." - ―Dubrak Qennto and Maris Ferasi, on a Frunchettan-sai art piece
The Frunchettan-sai species used a formal script that the Human trader Dubrak Qennto was familiar with. In 27 BBY, a Frunchettan-sai art piece marked with the script was present in the treasure room of a starship of the nomadic Vagaari species. After Chiss Expansionary Fleet Force Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo noticed the artifact and described the physical traits of its artist without being familiar with their species, Qennto confirmed the observation by noticing the presence of the script on the artwork.
Description
A formal script was used by the Frunchettan-sai, a sentient species[1] that originated in Wild Space's Frunchettan system[2][3] and controlled a handful of colony worlds in the Outer Rim Territories during the final decades of the existence of the Galactic Republic.[4]
History
- "The Frunchies, you think?"
"Yeah, right." - ―Maris Ferasi and Dubrak Qennto, before the latter heading to observe a Frunchettan-sai art piece closer
The formal script was used by the Frunchettan-sai species, which originated in the Frunchettan system.
The Human trader captain Dubrak Qennto was familiar with the script of the Frunchettan-sai, whom he referred to as the "Frunchies."[1] In 27 BBY,[5] a piece of Frunchettan-sai art that resembled nested tressles and was signed with markings in the script was present in the treasure room of a starship the nomadic Vagaari species used to transport plunder obtained through piracy and slave raids. The ship was captured in the Unknown Regions by Picket Force Two of the Chiss Expansionary Fleet, led by Force Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo, also known as Thrawn.[1]
Later, the Chiss commander captured Qennto and his crewmembers, Maris Ferasi and Jorj Car'das, and made them his guests. He then utilized deductive reasoning to describe the physical characteristics of the Frunchettan-sai art piece's creator—without being aware of the identity of the artist's species—to the trio so as to illustrate the point of them inspecting the treasure room and identifying the origin of the artwork in it in order to try and recognize any of the species the Vagaari had come into contact with. Ferasi suspected the description matched that of the Frunchettan-sai, leading the skeptical Qennto to inspect the artwork closer. Upon noticing the presence of the script on the artifact, the Human captain expressed his incredulity at the precision of Thrawn's observation and wondered whether the Chiss, despite his prior claims, had in fact established contact with the Republic before.[1]
Behind the scenes
The script used by the Frunchettan-sai was first mentioned in the 2006 novel Outbound Flight by Timothy Zahn.[1]

(backup link) (screenshot) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas, stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. This article treats the Frunchettan system as the location of one such homeworld with regard to the Frunchettan-sai species.
