"The Fringe Territories was named as a sector for the often mentioned "fringe of Imperial space" and placed to provide a counterbalance to the Outer Rim Territories."

Glen Allison created the Fringe Territories sector as a counterbalance to his Outer Rim Territory sector. In Legends however, the Outer Rim Territories is a region not sector.^[2]^[3] Early Star Wars Legends works applied the demonyms "fringer", to denizens of the Fringe, and "rimmer" to those of the Rim, which included the Outer Rim Territories. Other than Branth system, all other systems in this sector have since been placed elsewhere by the The Essential Atlas.^[3]
