Well, my long-awaited copy of The Essential Atlas finally arrived from Amazon, and I've been hungrily devouring it (figuratively speaking, of course!). However, while scouring it for information on the homeworlds of FA and GA aliens from Wookieepedia:WookieeProject Aliens, I've noticed that quite a few of the systems listed in the appendix differ from what has been established in earlier sources. For example, the home system of Makem Te is called the Makem Te system in the appendix, but previous sources (such as Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds) have called it the Makem system. Similarly, the Bith homeworld of Clak'dor VII is listed as being in the Clak'dor system, rather than the Colu system as it is listed in sources such as Galaxy Guide 4: Alien Races.
What should we do in these cases? Should we assume that these systems go by two names and create redirects from the Atlas names to the previous ones? Should we assume the Atlas overrides previous sources? Or does it say somewhere in the Atlas that some "systems" listed are actually planet names and ignore them in such cases? ~ SavageBob 05:42, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- It's a slippery slope. I would join their live chat on Suvudu.com on Sept 2 and ask Dan and Jason about it directly before assuming. Redirects for the moment would be alright. -- Riffsyphon1024 05:49, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- Either Dan or Jason commented—on TFN, I think—that the appendix entries were based on what the person looking them up would be most likely to search for. So some are planet names and not system names. You can see this even among Atlas entries; for example, "Onderon" is listed in the appendix instead of "Japrael", though the Atlas confirms that "Japrael" is the system name. - Lord Hydronium 05:57, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- There was a preliminary discussion of this on the talk page of the Atlas. I'll repost what I put there: "On different occasions, Jason Fry has stated that often the Appendix names go by the most prominent planet rather than a more obscure established name. Here, he says "Having a single entry for each system in the Appendix definitely makes some things difficult to find, particularly since determining which name to use was more art than science." Consequently, the way I would handle it on the Wook is that where there is an alternative system name, this should be the location of the article, with the casual or popular name from the Appendix being a redirect to this other name. E.g., have the "Moltok system" redirect to the Dartibek system." --Eyrezer 06:02, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- That makes sense. We keep the older, more established system names and redirect from the "new, user-friendly" ones. It's just annoying that they didn't come right out and say in the Atlas itself that some of the "systems" in the appendix are actually planets. ~ SavageBob 14:20, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- Too bad the Atlas doesn't have a handy redirect tool. ;P -- Riffsyphon1024 07:05, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
